Whole Numbers.

13 august 2013

What are numbers used for?
ü  Ordinal numbers – tell the order of things in a set—first, second, third, etc. Ordinal numbers do not show quantity. They only show rank or position.
§  In relation to time (e.g. 2nd child in the family)
§  In relation to space (e.g. 2nd from the finishing line)

ü  Nominal number - a telephone number, a player on a team. Nominal numbers do not show quantity or rank. They are used only to identify something.

ü   Cardinal number - tells "how many." Cardinal numbers show quantity.

ü  Measurement – Standard Index unit (SI unit)

There are many ways to find the sum of numbers.
One of the ways is by using ten frames.
Advantages of using 10 frames for children are:
·         Visual
·         Concrete
·         Number bonds
·         Number conservation
·         One-to-one correspondence
·         Cultivate place values (ones in relation to 10)
Take-away for today:
v  Things with different nouns cannot be added or subtracted
v  If a task has constraints, there are opportunities to problem solve.
